Historical Excursions in Kos

The Castle of the Knights of St John

The castle of the Knights of St John, built in C15, stands in front of the harbour with a narrow passage to the north. South of the castle, a bridge over the beautiful Avenue of Palms links the castle with the square where the plane tree of Hippocrates stands. Tradition says, that it was planted by Hippocrates and that he taught medicine in its shade.

Hippocrates

Hippocrates (460 BC – ca. 370 BC), born in Kos, was an ancient Greek physician. He is referred to as the ”Father of Modern Medicine” in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field as the founder of the Hippocratic School of medicine which lead to the establishment of medicine as a profession
The Hippocratic Oath (orkos) is the oath taken by doctors and other medical professionals swearing to practice medicine ethically.

The Asclepion

3km from Kos Town. The most important monument on the island is the Asklepion. It became famous in ancient Greece thanks to the skill and wisdom of its Asklepiads (doctors) and in particular of the most eminent of them all, Hippocrates.

Ancient Agora

The Agora (market), was built next to the harbour in order to facilitate trade. An impressive stairway leads from the road to the internal courtyard. Two restored columns form a portico. It is thought that construction began around 3 BC, while the few pieces from the buildings that have been preserved clearly show many construction periods.

Casa Romana

Casa Romana was a 3 AD Roman villa built on the ruins of a Hellenistic house, where wonderful mosaics were discovered. The villa is Pompeii style with 36 rooms and 3 atriums.
